When did you found the band?
Nicky Biscuit: We formed the band about a year ago, the long winter of 2006, its still not ended!
How did you meet?
Nicky: We were friends beforehand. We had all been in other bands previously. Jim had left his other band Rhesus around the time we formed. The rest of us were still in our bands, Video Club and Ciccone, originally we were using Subliminal Girls as a marketing tool for the other bands, it soon became apparent that people liked Subliminal Girls and we enjoyed playing the songs so much that our other bands trailed off / broke up. My other band still does play the occasional gig for old times’ sake though. It’s good to have something to go back to, I think it makes me appreciate both bands more. Arran still plays with another band called Bridport Cocksuckers, named after a type of knot. They are ok actually... Kinda pirate based skiffle, but noooo where near as good as Subliminal Girls!

Your single is called “Burn Koko”. Who or what is Koko, and why should Koko be “burned to the ground”?
Nicky: Koko is a nightclub in Camden, it should be burned, the people that go there should!
Do you see yourself as a band for boys or for girls?
Nicky: I think we are for both, I think boys like the punky sing a long side to our music and girls like the poppy melodic side. We are also reaaaallllly good looking so it gives people something to look at ;-)
What are your "drugs"?
Nicky: My drugs would most certainly be cigarettes, I can't go an hour without one. It would probably actually be cheaper to take smack as cigarettes are so expensive! |
Which bands got you into music?
Nicky: That's a good question, I've always had music in my life from a young age. My mum used to play Bowie a lot when I was young but it wasn't until I first heard Joy Division when I was about 12 that I actually picked up the guitar and a few years later the synth. I just loved the way that Joy Division used everything rhythmically, its kind of hypnotic and also insanely dancey. Around that time I was also listening to a lot of Yummy Fur, I loved the way that at the time they were writing these 30 second songs; they almost seemed, to me, like tiny films trapped in a song. They had a beginning a middle and an end but were so short although you never felt you were being short changed.... They did what they were there to do! I loved the way that they sounded so simple but were actually technically and arrangement wise very complex. That got me to think of melody a lot more. I've spoken since to the singer, John about them, which gave me an incite into them, "everything was there for a reason" he said, I loved the fact that they were so thought out and sculpted... They were perfect pop songs.
What is the secret of your glamorous looks ? What do you do to stay glamorous and fresh all night?
Nicky: I think the key to our looks is to stay in very dark rooms and keep people at a distance! Arran almost looks human in the right light! Although maybe if I mention some products companies will sponsor us! Nivea, always use Nivea products. They keep the Subliminal Girls look young and fresh all night! |
